Workshops

We hope you can joins us at one or more of the exciting pre-meeting, in-meeting or post-meeting workshops at this year’s ASM.  Workshops are available to all registered meeting delegates, however minimum and maximum numbers apply.

We invite you to indicate your expression of interest (EOI) in attending a workshop, via the online registration portal.  Those delegates submitting an EOI will be given preferential registration when workshop registrations open in April.


PRE-MEETING WORKSHOPS – SATURDAY 17 NOVEMBER

ACEM New Fellows Workshop

The ACEM New Fellows Program aims to assist new FACEMs with the transition to Fellowship. This full-day workshop is a chance to hear from other FACEMs about their experiences, including practical tips and tricks for transitioning into Consultant life, and is also a great opportunity to network with other new FACEMs.

Advanced Airway Workshop

This is a session supervised by senior airway educators from the department of Anaesthesia. This will involve exposure to advanced airway techniques incorporating a wide range of airway modalities. There will be hands on experience in a simulated environment.

Paediatric Emergency Procedures Workshop

Refresh your paediatric procedural skills with specialist facilitators from Western Australia’s tertiary Paediatric ED. This workshop covers common paediatric procedures such as lumbar punctures, femoral nerve blocks, removal of ENT foreign bodies and procedural sedation and analgesia (PSA). Participants will be arranged in small groups will get hands on experience, guided by expert facilitators.

Acupuncture in Emergency Medicine and Acute Pain

Ever wanted more options to offer your patients than splinting and pharmacotherapy for their pain? This workshop covers acupuncture theory and safety (pre-reading), and the use of acupuncture in ED setting in different clinical contexts.

Advanced Wound Repair and Hand Injury Workshop

Using a combination of lectures and hands-on practice and tuition, this workshop aims to demonstrate advanced wound close techniques suitable for use in the emergency department. The workshop may include topics such as:

  • More advanced sutures such as sub-cuticular and closures for parallel cuts, and deep wounds not involving important structures
  • Challenging anatomical sites, such as ears, lips, and the peri-orbital area that can be done in ED rather than referral to theatre.
  • Uncomplicated hand injuries, including simple tendon repair
  • Skin flaps and V-shaped lacerations
  • Alternatives to sutures and when to use them
  • When we really need to refer

The workshop will be run and supervised by plastic surgeons experienced in emergency wound repair.

Palliative and End of Life Care Workshop

Through a mixture of case based discussions and interactive activities, this workshop will use the increasingly common scenario of older people with palliative care and end of life needs in the ED. Topics include breaking bad news, symptom control at the end of life, symptom control in palliative care, difficult dilemmas in end of life care. By the completion of the workshop participants will be familiar with evidence based guidelines for the emergency care of older people, and be equipped with practical skills to implement these locally. Pre-reading materials and other resources will be available to participants in advance on the GEMSIG ACEM website. Delivered by FACEMs with expertise in geriatrics and palliative care as well as non-FACEM specialists, the workshop is relevant for front line staff with an interest in acute geriatric ED care.

Paediatric Emergency Medicine Radiology Workshop

This workshop is aimed at the emergency medicine trainee or consultant wishing to upskill in interpreting paediatric diagnostic imaging. Run by consultant paediatric radiologists, this 2 hour workshop will cover major trauma (including CT), minor trauma, abdominal and chest plain films, as well as the recognition of radiological features of non-accidental injury.

Stabilisation and Preparation for Transportation of the Sick Child or Neonate

This interactive workshop, run by a paediatric intensivist and neonate retrieval specialist, focuses on managing the sick neonate or young child and preparing them for transportation. Through case based discussion you will be guided through key aspects of caring for the critically unwell child. This workshop is aimed at both registrars and consultants working in the remote, rural or regional setting.

Clinical Supervisors Workshop

This interactive workshop will provide participants with an update on the FACEM Training Program structure, requirements and assessments and an overview of the teaching and learning behaviours that underpin the principles of supervision. Learn how to give meaningful and constructive feedback, how to identify the trainee who may be in difficulty and what strategies you can use to assist. The day will involve shared discussions, videos and role plays and participants will leave with tips, tricks and resources to assist them in their roles.

Who should attend?

Any Fellow who provides clinical or educational supervision to FACEM trainees.

Toxicology Workshop

This will be facilitated by expert toxicologists. Using the principles of small group learning supported by case discussion and literature updates, we will explore recent changes and challenges in the assessment and management of toxicology and toxinology cases. This will look specifically at abnormal ECGs in toxicology, changes and novel use of antidotes and the latest evidence in snakebite… This workshop is beyond simple poisoning.

This workshop will discuss unusual and challenging toxicology cases and toxindromes.

POST MEETING WORKSHOPS

Far and Wide: Insights into Retrieval and Emergency Care over Massive Distances with RFDSWA

Case based review of retrieval and transport medicine principles and practice. The morning includes a tour of the RFDS Jandakot base, and demonstration of specialised aeromedical equipment including the custom built RFDS bariatric transfer system.

Wilderness Medicine Workshop

This course is all about getting away to the Margaret River region for a weekend of adventure and fun, whilst experiencing the beautiful South West of WA with WA’s top wilderness medicine educators!

Activities include caving, rock climbing, kayaking and hiking (to be confirmed). Cost includes transportation, accommodation, all activities and meals.
